Relationship between action spectra for chlorophyll a fluorescence and photosynthetic O2 evolution in algae

چکیده
Relative excitation spectra of chlorophyll a fluorescence are shown to be very close to relative action spectra of photosystem II O2 evolution in seven microand macro-algae of five phyla. The conditions under which this correspondence should hold, based on theoretical considerations, and the applications of this correspondence to interpretation of fluorescence excitation spectra of chlorophyll a from natural populations are discussed. The spectra presented are interpreted in relation to the light-harvesting pigments and their association with the two photosystems.

Identification of chlorophyll b in extracts of prokaryotic algae by fluorescence spectroscopy.
Solvent extracts of three different prokaryotic algae from three species of didemnid ascidians contained pigments identified, on the basis of their fluorescence excitation (E)and fluorescence emission (F)spectral maxima (measured in nm) at 77K, as chlorophyll a (E 449, F 678) and chlorophyll b (E 478, F 658). The release of algae on cutting or freezing Diplosoma virens was accompanied by a stro...
متن کاملAction spectra for nitrate and nitrite assimilation in blue-green algae.
Action spectra for the assimilation of nitrate and nitrite have been obtained for several blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) with different accessory pigment composition. The action spectra for both nitrate and nitrite utilization by nitrate-grown Anacystis nidulans L-1402-1 cells exhibited a clear peak at about 620 nanometers, corresponding to photosystem II (PSII) C-phycocyanin absorption, the ...

[1] Global retrieval of solar induced fluorescence emitted by terrestrial vegetation can provide an unprecedented measure for photosynthetic efficiency. The GOSAT (JAXA, launched Feb. 2009) and OCO‐2 (NASA, to be launched 2013) satellites record high‐resolution spectra in the O2 A‐band region, overlapping part of the chlorophyll fluorescence spectrum. We show that fluorescence cannot be unambig...
متن کاملAdventures with Cyanobacteria: A Personal Perspective
Cyanobacteria, or the blue-green algae as they used to be called until 1974, are the oldest oxygenic photosynthesizers. We summarize here adventures with them since the early 1960s. This includes studies on light absorption by cyanobacteria, excitation energy transfer at room temperature down to liquid helium temperature, fluorescence (kinetics as well as spectra) and its relationship to photos...
متن کاملRelationship between the Absorption and Emission Spectra and the "Red Drop" in the Action Spectra of Fluorescence In Vivo.
The Stepanov equation, relating the intensity of emission, f(e)(v), at a given frequency, and that of absorption, k(v), at the same frequency, is applied, in its modified form (see equation 3 in text) to suspensions of Chlorella, Porphyridium, and Anacystis and to chlorophyll solutions. This application can reveal whether the yield of fluorescence, Phi(v), is constant, or changes with frequency...
